Modern wood-burning systems will be permitted as secondary heating sources in new build homes under the upcoming legislation

In a landmark decision for the home heating industry, the UK Government has confirmed that modern wood burning stoves will be allowed as a secondary heating source in new homes built under the upcoming Future Homes Standard.

The confirmation came in a formal letter from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG).

Confirming the decision, Matthew Pennycook MP, Minister of State for Housing and Planning, stated: “Under the standards proposed in the consultation, a wood burning stove would be permitted as a secondary heating source in new homes.”

This reassurance follows the Government’s public consultation on the Future Homes Standard, which closed in March 2024. The standard is designed to ensure all new homes are “zero carbon ready” and require no retrofitting as the national grid continues to decarbonise.

The decision follows sustained lobbying by the Stove Industry Association (SIA) and a wide coalition of more than 1,500 businesses, including manufacturers, installers, and woodland owners.

The group argued for the continued inclusion of wood burning stoves in the Future Homes Standard, citing them as a critical part of the UK’s renewable heating future.

The industry coalition highlighted five key benefits of modern stoves:

Cleaner air, as today’s models dramatically reduce emissions compared to open fires or older stoves
Energy resilience, as wood burners offer decentralised, off-grid heating in times of power outages or energy shortages
Local economic support, as sustainably sourced wood creates rural jobs and encourages responsible woodland management
Homeowners benefit from more choice of options to meet their low-carbon heating goals.
The group highlight that modern wood burning stoves, when used with the right fuel and technologies, are particularly important for rural or off-grid households.

Manufacturers praised the decision from government and those who worked to ensure this outcome for the industry.

“This is a very positive and pragmatic step from Government. It recognises the role modern wood burning stoves can play in supporting energy resilience and net zero goals, especially when integrated with other renewable systems,” said Andy Dimond, sales & marketing manager at SFL Flues & Chimneys. “As a manufacturer deeply committed to cleaner, more efficient heating technologies, we welcome this positive development and thank all those involved in working to achieve this”.

As the Future Homes Standard shapes the design of next-generation homes, the Government’s decision will allow wood burning stoves remain a viable heating option, aligned with net zero ambitions.
